Cortelha returns to celebrate Christmas with the traditional Madeira

The cork nativity scene is also a tradition and can be visited until the 6th of January

The Cortelha Christmas tree, in Serra do Caldeirão, will be lit again this Saturday, December 24th, at 16 pm, at the lardo of the Associação dos Amigos da Cortelha.

«The organization has verified that this initiative becomes a great moment of fraternization between all the inhabitants but also visitors, who at this time of year end up going up the mountain and experiencing the Christmas traditions of the Algarve interior, discovering in the Madeiro de Natal da Cortelha a meeting point for sharing stories», says the Association, clarifying that the wood will be lit until the 6th of January.

This Christmas tradition is joined by the cork crib, which can also be visited until the 6th of January. The nativity scene, which is located in the association's square, was inaugurated last Saturday, December 17th, and is the result of the work of the local population who resorted to the use of materials from the area (cork, cane, moss and riverside stones) for the its construction.

«The nativity scene in this village in the parish of Salir intends to reflect the global context of the meaning of Christmas, from the path taken by the Magi Kings, to the hut where the birth of Jesus is traditionally attributed, passing through its setting in the rural environment. It will thus be possible to appreciate several life-size figures, namely the wise men on their camels, as well as a donkey and a cow», points out the Associação dos Amigos da Cortelha.
