The Portimão PSD says it is "satisfied" with the measures taken last week by the AMAL Intermunicipal Council to save water, which include the closure of municipal swimming pools and savings in watering public spaces.

However, the Portimão Social Democrats regret the «inconsistency» of the Portimão PS, which has a majority in the various municipalities, and which, in April, in the Municipal Assembly, «voted against a proposal similar to the one Isilda Gomes voted now in July favorably in AMAL'.

In a statement, PSD/Portimão recalls that one of its municipal deputies, Bruno Candeias, in the AM session on 29 April, stressed the need to adapt to the reality of the drought in the Algarve. “What made sense a few years ago may not do today and we have to adopt new behaviors and strategies to use the water resource more intelligently in our region”, said the AM member.

Following this intervention in public session, as evidenced by the official minutes of the Municipal Assembly, in that same session, the PSD bench of Portimão presented «several proposals that aimed to intelligently reduce water consumption in the Municipality», among them the « conversion, by the Portimão City Council, of all the existing natural grass in roundabouts and similar areas not usable by more sustainable solutions, such as typical Mediterranean garden plants».

This measure, guarantee the Social Democrats, “represents a reduction in the consumption of drinking water by 3 to 10 times, also greatly reducing maintenance costs and resources, which could be channeled to other spaces that are so in need”.

It was also presented, by the PSD Portimão municipal bench, in that same session last April, “a proposal to plant 50 indigenous trees in the municipality, in spaces destined for this purpose for many years, in sidewalks and leisure areas on the road to Alvor and the riverside area of Alvor, with a replica of this action in other beds intended for trees existing in the three parishes».

However, stresses the PSD in its statement today, “it was a surprise that the entire auditorium of the Portimão Museum, where this public session of the Municipal Assembly took place, saw these proposals being rejected with exclusively the votes against the PS bench”.

Therefore, now, in July, «it was with joy and satisfaction that the Political Commission and the Mayors of the PSD of Portimão» received the news of the approval, by the Algarve municipalities, of «joint measures to face the serious period of drought that the region is going through, namely the reduction of irrigation days and the cessation of irrigation of public green spaces with lawns reconverted by autochthonous species with less need for water availability'.

«This measure, approved at a meeting of AMAL with a favorable vote of the mayor of Portimão, was precisely what was proposed by the PSD in April and which PS Portimão voted against», conclude the Portimão social democrats.
