The Union of Parishes of Faro will build a bust of Salgueiro Maia. The unveiling will take place in the early hours of April 25th, at 00:21, the time when, in 1974, “Grândola Vila Morena” was heard, one of the slogans of the Revolution.

The bust, which was created by the sculptor Pedro Félix, will be located in Salgueiro Maia square, in Faro, near the São Luís Stadium.

To Bruno Lage, president of the União das Freguesias de Faro, «it is only fair to pay homage to Salgueiro Maia and perpetuate his memory in this bust as he became the central character of the Carnation Revolution due to his courage, spirit of leadership, determination and competence. It was he who commanded the military column that left Santarém and marched on Lisbon, occupying Terreiro do Paço, on April 25, 1974».

The celebration program for the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April, of the Union of Parishes of Faro, will encompass other moments.

The first will be this Tuesday, April 23rd, from 18pm, at the Maria Campina Regional Conservatory, where a ceremony will be held to honor all the mayors of the extinct parishes of Sé and São Pedro and the current União of the Parishes of FaroSince 1964.

Finally, on the afternoon of the 25th, União das Freguesias will promote, at the Pavilhão Desportivo da Penha, its usual “25 de Abril” minibasket tournament, which will be attended by more than two hundred athletes.
