Elider Viegas, resigning president of the Association of Hotels and Tourist Enterprises of the Algarve (AHETA), who is re-candidate for the position, released this Saturday its list «comprised exclusively of entrepreneurs based in the Algarve», in contrast to the list of Helder Martins, which he accuses of "giving in to the centralist and hegemonic interests of Lisbon".

Elidérico says that his list is made up of «hotel and tourist entrepreneurs from the Algarve, representing the various business interests across the region, from Vila Real de Santo António to Lagos and Sagres, thus giving expression to the association's representativeness».

Under the motto “Assure the Present, Guarantee the Future”, Elidérico's list includes, among others, hotelier Vítor Clemente, as candidate for president of the General Assembly, and Amadeu Rodrigues, as president of the Supervisory Board.

The objective, according to the list of the outgoing president, if elected, is “to pursue a strategy that has on the horizon the reinforcement of AHETA, as a strong and dynamic associative structure, and in which everyone continues to review and actively participate, instead of subserviences and dependencies of centralisms in Lisbon, carried out by candidates from the other competing list».

This is because, highlights Elidérico's list in a statement sent to the newsrooms, «AHETA wants to continue to increasingly be the meeting point for entrepreneurs in the sector in the Algarve, refusing to be a structure at the service of only a few, regardless of the legitimacy of its interests'.

AHETA, he argues, must «engage actively in building a positive approach to tourism in the Algarve, with the aim of safeguarding the business interests of tourist activity, innovating in its ability to intervene, while continuing to pursue a strategy that has contributed to the affirmation and public and institutional recognition of the association».

In this case, among other aspects, “the conclusion of Collective Bargaining Agreements, the provision of support services to associates in labor law matters, the monitoring of the evolution of the sector in the region and in the competing international tourist markets, etc. etc".

Elidérico Viegas' list also defends «the reversal of a process that has not recognized the realities of the Algarve tourist offer and markets, translated into policies that are often wrong and with perverse results, among which we highlight the ancestral treatment of disfavor given to the region in terms of public investment, the most striking example of which is the failure to build the new Central Hospital».

AHETA, if this is the winning list, will have «concrete proposals», in order to participate in the various forums, such as the Tourism Region, Regional Coordination Commission, Algarve Tourism Association.

Bearing in mind that “the Algarve is the Portuguese region most economically affected by the pandemic, given the strong presence of the tourist sector in regional life and society”, the list defends the need for “positive discrimination measures aimed at guaranteeing the survival of the Industry”. Tourism and the region as a tourist destination'.

The crisis caused by the pandemic has mainly affected small and medium-sized companies in the Algarve region, “which includes most tourist developments, whose investments and operations are particularly exposed and therefore dependent on the systematic use of financing through bank credit”.

As for the Specific Plan to Support the Recovery of Tourism in the Algarve, «with its own endowment and financial means, as announced by the current government in the Assembly of the Republic», it «is waiting for better days».

The list led by Elidérico Viegas is also committed to «the creation of a unique regional associative platform, as opposed to a centralist associative strategy, aiming to affirm the Algarve and the business interests of the largest and most important Portuguese tourist region, both at a regional level. , both at a national and international level, following up on the ongoing talks with other regional associative organizations in the sector on this matter».
