Loulé Jazz brings the best national musicians and some surprises

Eight ensembles meet over four days at the Cerca do Convento do Espírito Santo

Bernardo Moreira, Eduardo Cardinho, João Frade, Maria João and Carlos Bica, Pedro Moreira, Miguel Meirinhos, Loulé Jazz Trio and Zé Eduardo are the names that shine in the center of Loulé, between the 29th of July and the 1st of July August, in another edition of Loulé Jazz. In its 26th edition, the festival celebrates national jazz with musicians from all over the country.

Mário Laginha, pianist, composer and artistic director of Loulé Jazz, with roots in the city of Loulé, designed an entirely Portuguese poster, underlining the artistic quality of Portuguese musicians.

Internationally, two names join the lineup: the legendary Jorge Pardo is a guest of the Algarve's Trio João Frade, and Julian Arguelles has a special participation in the concert of the Loulé Jazz Trio, a group that was born from this spirit of celebration of the city that welcomes the universe of Jazz and improvised music since 1995.

Loulé Jazz is the active Festival in Portugal, with the highest number of editions held. It didn't just take place in the year 2020.

In total, there are eight ensembles that meet over four days, at the Cerca do Convento do Espírito Santo, in an initiative of the Casa da Cultura and Municipality of Loulé.

Loulé Jazz concert schedules will be announced on July 22, in accordance with all safety rules defined by the General Health Department.

“This is not a year like any other, we all know. Since the first period of confinement, the musicians' community has seen their work reduced to nothing, or almost nothing. With such a large number of musicians and jazz bands in Portugal, we thought it was time to honor them by making a Loulé Jazz Festival totally dedicated to them. We wanted musicians from all over the country to come, from the well-known to the undiscovered», explains Mário Laginha, artistic director of Loulé Jazz..

«We would like the “Loulé Jazz” 2021 to be a great celebration of Portuguese Jazz, which already has – I would like to give as much emphasis as possible to this – a variety of styles and a quality that urgently needs to have greater expression on the stage of the country”, he adds.

«The Casa da Cultura de Loulé, with the support and funding of the Municipality of Loulé, makes it possible for eight groups, all of them Portuguese, to come this year to share their music. The choice was not easy. There would be many more to invite. Maybe that's why it makes perfect sense to make this year of “Loulé Jazz” the first of many to celebrate Jazz and Portuguese musicians», stresses Mário Laginha.

«After 19 months of such a particular health context, there is no known outbreak caused by any cultural event. The effort of cultural agents, technicians, artists and all the teams involved in ensuring that Culture continues to fulfill its role in society is to be commended”, stress, for their part, those responsible for the Casa da Cultura de Loulé.

«It is with complete safety that we want to provide a reunion between audience and artists. Art is fundamental in the regeneration of the economy. It is also our role to ensure the continuity and quality of cultural activities», says the Casa da Cultura de Loulé.
