Vilamoura: Portuguese sailor keeps Portugal in the race to Tokyo in ILCA 6 class

ILCA class Olympic Qualification for the European Continent takes place until Saturday in Vilamoura waters

Sailor Carolina João keeps Portugal in the race to Tokyo 2020 in the ILCA 6 class after the second day of the European Olympic Qualification that takes place in Vilamoura, guaranteeing one of the two available spots.

The other remains in the hand of Israeli sailor Shai Kakon who despite being one of the youngest athletes in the competition continues to register a good performance, maintaining the 5th place in the general classification.

Spaniard Joel Rodriguez Perez and Belgian William De Smet also continue to position themselves as the favorites to win the two Olympic places available in the ILCA 7 class.

This qualifying event for the European continent seeks to fill the 4 vacancies still free for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games: two for the women's fleet (ILCA 6) and two more for the men's fleet (ILCA 7). There are 8 countries that compete for women's places and 17 for men's.

On a day when the wind was unstable, but always above 10 knots, the men's general classification underwent changes with Croatian Filip Jurišić (4th in the European Championship 2020) now leading the men's fleet, followed by the runner-up in the title o Briton Michael Beckett and Russian Maxim Nikolaev.

The best Portuguese is Eduardo Marques (27th), followed by Santiago Villax Sampaio (61st), Rui Silveira (74th), Lourenço Mateus (80th), André Granadeiro (106th), João Pontes (135) and Gonçalo Castro Nunes (139th) in a fleet of 139 boats.

In the women's fleet, the Danish Anne-Marie Rindom (bronze medal at the Olympic Games in 2016 and world champion in 2015) maintained the lead by winning 3 of the 4 races held so far. Swiss Maud Jayet rose today to 2nd place, winning one of the races, and French Marie Barrue maintains 3rd place.

Carolina João is the best Portuguese in 29rd place, followed by Mafalda Pires de Lima (42th), Leonor Dutra (83th) and Federica Franchi (86th) in a total of 89 sailors.

The ILCA class Olympic Qualification for the European Continent takes place until Saturday in Vilamoura waters, in an event that brings together almost 230 sailors from 44 countries.
