Regatta1The XXVII edition of the Portos dos Descobrimentos Regatta, between Lagos and Palos de La Frontera (Puerto Deportivo de Mazagón), started yesterday in Lagos. Arrival in Palos is scheduled for Sunday, the 10th, in the afternoon.

The annual regatta of the Ports of the Discoveries, organized by the Clube de Vela de Lagos, the Escuela de Vela – CEPSA (from Palos Palos de La Frontera, has as from La Frontera), the Town Hall of Lagos and the Ayuntamiento of great purpose to remember the contribution of the two cities (Lagos and Palos de La Frontera) to the epic Portuguese and Spanish Maritime Discoveries.

This initiative, which is the largest national cruise regatta and which alternates the start and finish between Lagos and Palos de La Frontera, will count on the participation of 40 boats and around 250 sailors. This year it will also be accompanied by the Caravela Boa Esperança.

In this edition, the team presentation ceremony took place yesterday in Lagos, with a convivial dinner, at the Marina Club restaurant, in Marina de Lagos.

On October 27, 1992 the ceremony of the Twinning Act of Lagos with Palos de La Frontera took place, where the two municipalities sealed their commitment to “maintain permanent ties, to favor and encourage exchanges between its inhabitants in all fields, to develop, through a joint understanding, the feeling of universal brotherhood and solidarity and to join forces to contribute to the success of these tasks of peace and prosperity”. Palos de La Frontera was the first city with which Lagos was associated.

Regatta2From Palos, in 1492, Christopher Columbus and the Pinzón brothers (businessmen and citizens of Palos de La Frontera) set out on the famous journey that led to the discovery of America. Lagos, on the other hand, was the place of residence of Infante D. Henrique and the departure port of several Portuguese expeditions, namely the first voyage beyond Bojador, led in 1434 by the lacobrigense Gil Eanes.

More than 500 years later, the two peoples with a maritime vocation are meeting again in this adventure of crossing the seas and promoting a healthy dialogue and cultural exchange.
