Final decision: Faro approves classification of Ramalhete as a set of municipal interest

Ramalhete is an infrastructure of the University of Algarve which, since 1994, has been managed by CCMAR

The Municipal Assembly of Faro approved, on the 12th of May, the conclusion of the procedure for classifying the set formed by the two buildings of the Marinha do Ramalhete Station as a set of municipal interest.

After becoming aware of the lack of participation during the period of prior hearing of interested parties, the municipality sent the process to the Municipal Assembly to approve the final decision regarding the procedure for classifying this set of municipal interest.

In a note, the Chamber of Faro remember that the Bouquet It is an infrastructure of the University of the Algarve which, since 1994, has been managed by the Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve (CCMAR), functioning as an experimental station, and is one of the few architectural remains that testifies to the cultural heritage resulting from tuna fishing in the region of the Algarve – and the only one in Faro.

«Tuna fishing in the Algarve dates back to the time of the Phoenician and Carthaginian settlers, with records of fixed traps exploited by the Arabs. Tuna traps once dominated the entire coastal zone, from Vila Real de Santo António to Aljezur, having been an important source of income in the region until the 70s, when catches dropped drastically», continues the autarchy.

According to the Chamber, in Faro, there were three tuna traps: Armação do Cabo de Santa Maria, Ramalhete and Forte, operated by the Companhia de Pescadores do Cabo de Santa Maria, Ramalhete and Forte, created in 1899.

There are records of these structures occupying, in 1935, about 10 hectares of sea surface in front of Praia de Faro and the few traces that remain of them live on today in the memory of the fishermen from Armação and the oldest people in the Algarve.

The complex of the former Armação do Ramalhete is made up of three buildings: the main building which corresponds to the facilities of the former armature, built at the end of the 282th century, beginning of the 1991th century, with an area of 81 square meters, a secondary building built in a period after XNUMX, with an area of XNUMX square meters, and another more recent construction.
