Prosecutor's Office accuses man over the case of an elderly woman attacked by ants in Boliqueime

User of the nursing home of Misericórdia de Boliqueime was found covered in ants

A 49-year-old man was charged with the crime of harming physical integrity through negligence, due to the case of the elderly woman who was found covered in ants in the nursing home of Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Boliqueime, in June 2022.

According to the Public Prosecutor's Office, "the accused was an employee of the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Boliqueime, with the task of, among others, changing the diapers of the users and making several rounds to their rooms, to check if they needed support from third parties".

On the day in question, the man, «not obeying the schedule of tasks scheduled for the night shift, between 00:00 and 8:00, did not go to the room of a 96-year-old woman, dependent on third parties to do her hygiene and dressing".

The user, who ended up dying shortly after this episode, «was wearing a diaper and was fed through a tube» and was «disoriented in time and space».

During the defendant's shift, "hundreds or thousands of ants entered the room where the woman was and bit her on the head, limbs and body, causing skin irritation and drooling", revealed the Public Ministry.

The accusation was made by the Public Prosecutor in the 2nd section of the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action of Faro (DIAP).
