It is necessary to attract young people to train in tourism, defends regional commission

According to the Regional Training Commission for the Tourism Sector

Adjusting work benefits to the expectations of young people, valuing and increasing the prestige of professions in the tourist industry and qualification of professionals already in the job market were some of the issues discussed at the meeting of the Regional Training Commission for the Tourism Sector promoted by the School of Hospitality and Turismo do Algarve (EHTA), which took place on the 26th.

This commission, which comprises close to two dozen public and private entities, directly or indirectly linked to this industry, has the mission to «understand and identify training needs in the field of Tourism and participate in the definition and implementation of the training strategy. », according to the EHTA.

«Improvement of working conditions, with more social and cultural benefits, more free time, support for settling in the territory and mobility, were some of the ideas launched and debated, as a way to make the professions linked to Tourism, attractive and prestigious. » he added.

In addition to the balance sheet and an X-ray of the 2021/2022 school year, “the future was also envisaged, taking into account the recovery of Tourism, the current lack of human resources and the necessary ability to attract young people to this sector”.

«Attracting young people to study tourism and hospitality is a current and very serious challenge. Many entities do not realize that this problem starts right upstream. This is a real concern as the lack of interest of young people will be reflected in the future of our region and will have as main impact the lack of human resources in the tourism sector. It is very important that we work together to attract young people and retain talent. It was this request for cooperation that we launched», according to Paula Vicente, director of the School of Hospitality and Tourism of the Algarve.
