Ciência Viva de Lagos marks 500 years since the death of Fernão de Magalhães

One session will be more for children and youth and another for the general public

The 500th anniversary of the death of Fernão de Magalhães will be celebrated in Lagos, this Tuesday, the 27th, with two sessions, one for the youngest and the other for the general public.

The initiative, organized by the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos and by the mission structure of the V Centenary of the First Circum-Navigation Journey, will take place online.

To mark this date, the Mission Structure has developed two audiovisual projects, one dedicated to children and youth and the other to the general public, to be broadcast on the internet, at 10:00 am and 18:00 pm on the 27th of April, through its Youtube page .

From the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos, a children's and youth session will be broadcast on what the crossing of the Pacific Ocean represented and other aspects of Fernão de Magalhães' legacy, through expository moments, interviews and pre-recorded content about different historical, scientific and cultural themes. The session will last for two hours.

This partnership with the Mission Structure «is a natural result of what we had already done two years ago, at the Pavilion of Knowledge, when the Magellan celebrations began, as well as our production of the scenic dramatization “A Viagem”».

«This time, we collaborated both with this show “A Viagem” and with the production of specific audiovisual content about the Pacific Ocean, its characteristics, from biological diversity to atmospheric phenomena, as well as geological particularities of the largest and oldest ocean in the Land», explains Luís Azevedo Rodrigues, executive director of the Centro Ciência Viva de Lagos.

Throughout the programmes, different aspects of Fernão de Magalhães' expedition will be addressed, especially what was left of his legacy and which still remains today from his first circumnavigation voyage.
