Situation of workers in times of pandemic was highlighted in João Ferreira's visit to the Algarve

The candidate for President of the Republic visited CCMAR and expressed solidarity with FAGAR workers

The situation of workers and populations in the Algarve at the end of summer was the focal point of the visit that João Ferreira, candidate for President of the Republic, made last Friday, October 2nd, to the councils of Faro and Olhão.

In a region that the candidate knows well, the result of many visits and initiatives developed as a member of the European Parliament, João Ferreira noted that, in addition to the usual increase in unemployment, we are witnessing the situation worsened by the health, social and economic consequences of the epidemic.

During a visit to the Center for Marine Sciences, accompanied by its director and other technicians, it was possible to learn more about the reality of the researchers and the scientific research carried out in this multidisciplinary research center which focuses on the sea and which is located at the Gambelas dam. University of the Algarve.

Concerns about professional instability among researchers and other staff, underfunding and uncertainty about the future are the issues that mark the research that takes place in the academic world, mostly ensured by projects and funding grants that are too limited in time and in the conditions they offer to scientific workers.

João Ferreira, a trained biologist and particularly knowledgeable about the constraints felt in this area – he chaired the Association of Scientific Research Fellows -, made a point of including this contact in the set of the first visits and meetings with institutions that, in the coming months, will form a demanding journey that will be developed throughout the country.

In parallel, the ongoing struggles in the municipalities, for better working conditions and for the right to supplement unhealthy conditions, hardship and risk, also motivated an action of contact and demonstration of solidarity with the workers of FAGAR, a municipal water and waste company. Faro.

During the afternoon, accompanied by fifty supporters and in compliance with all health measures, João Ferreira made a public intervention in the center of Olhão, which was preceded by an action of contact with the population and traders in the city's downtown.

In addition to information gathered in the contacts developed throughout the day, João Ferreira «transmitted the objectives and importance of his candidacy, which, being that of one man, is also that of all those who do not give up, do not hide, do not surrender» , highlights your application.
