University of Algarve shows past and future in Parliament

Exhibition tells the «stories of history» of the Algarve academy

It's “40 years of creating the future”, shown through photographs, videos and projects, all in an interactive way. The University of Algarve (UAlg) inaugurated, this Thursday, 9 May, an exhibition commemorating its 40th anniversary, on display in the «house where it all began»: the Parliament.

It is there that the Algarve academy will show, until the 7th of June, what it is, along a journey that is already 40 years old, but also what it wants to be in the future.

Therefore, in addition to images from the past, the exhibition, which can be seen near the staircase that gives access to the room where the plenary sessions of the Assembly of the Republic are held, also shows projects for the future, carried out by the University of Algarve.

Through an interactive map, for example, it is possible to learn more about the project that wants to make Ilha da Culatra self-sustainable.

At the opening of the show, the Sul Informação attended, at the Assembly of the Republic, Paulo Águas, dean of UAlg, considered that "this is the most significant moment of the celebrations of the 40th anniversary of the University".

«Through the exhibition “Universidade do Algarve – 40 years of creating a future”, inaugurated in the place where it all began, the House of Democracy, we intend to show some of the most striking facts over these 40 years, with particular emphasis on the current lines of research and its link to the Sustainable Development Goals, which define the priorities and aspirations of global sustainable development for 2030”, he added.

For the leader of the Algarve academy, the «Algarve has been and will continue to be our laboratory, teaching and research, from which we make our contribution to society and to a world that we want to be more sustainable, more inclusive, more prosperous, fairer, more tolerant».

Making an analysis of what has been the path of UAlg, the dean considered that the Algarve academy feels «uan enormous communion with the region».

«We feel a huge support from the regional forces, which is not unrelated to the fact that we are the only public higher education institution in the region, unique among the five flat regions of mainland Portugal», he considered.

Therefore, in the opinion of Paulo Águas, this exhibition «is also an exhibition of the Algarve» and «not just of the University».

Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues, president of the Assembly of the Republic, did not miss the inauguration of the exhibition, which is shown in the property of the sovereign organ he leads. With a relaxed speech, he made a point of stressing that the exhibition tells "the stories written in history" of the University of Algarve.

“This is an institution different from all others in its genesis because it was the first university to be created by law of the Parliament. The exhibition aims to make known all the national and international prestige of the University of Algarve, in its most different areas of knowledge», he said.

At the time, the University of the Algarve awarded the Assembly of the Republic a Medal of Merit

For the President of the Assembly of the Republic, without the UAlg «it would not have been possible to reach the level of human, scientific and technical development that exists today in the Algarve».

The inauguration of the exhibition, which was preceded by a short visit to the São Bento Palace, was also attended by a large delegation of people from the Algarve, from mayors, deputies, regional directors and professors at UAlg.

The exhibition, after leaving the Assembly of the Republic, will tour the Algarve, contributing to «a closer relationship between academia and the Algarve population», concluded, in turn, Paulo Águas.

The University of Algarve took advantage of this moment to also award the Assembly of the Republic a Medal of Merit, given to Ferro Rodrigues by the rector of UAlg.
