When Enano, Leo Lobo and Thorsten Grütjen – “Tosta Mista” – come on stage, they will be much more than three clowns. “Clowns” is a show that reflects the fears, frustrations and personal stories of each one, in yet another production of "Lavrar o Mar", with exhibitions from May 31st to June 3rd, in Monchique and Rogil (Aljezur).

German by nationality, but residing in Aljezur, Thorsten Grütjen, better known as Tosta Mista, is “anxious” for the show's premiere.

“For all of us, this is a challenge as we are going to share our personal stories. We will all show our clowns interiors and what is hidden behind the mask," he said, in conversation with the Sul Informação.

Is that the premise of “Clowns” is to “explore the innermost side” of these three clowns by profession. "Let's get out of our comfort zone," summed Thorsten.

The entire show is the creation of Giacomo Scalisi, one of the programmers of “Lavrar o Mar”, a program that comes to an end with “Clowns”. «I thought of making this creation with people who, last year, had already worked on the play “Rastilho”, by Madalena Victorino. I caught this trio and imagined a show with them», he explained to Sul Informação.

In the former sawmill of Monchique, on May 31st and June 1st, and at the headquarters of Rancho Folclórico do Rogil, in Aljezur, on June 2nd and 3rd, everyone will be able to attend a «tragic-comic show».

«What is being a clown today? What is this profession? What are the doubts clowns have? Let's talk about all this», summarized Giacomo Scalisi.

For this creation there was an in-depth work, done with the three clowns. «They weren't used to it because it's a more theatrical show and these clowns they work more on the street. It is necessary to have another presence», he said.

Thorsten Grütjen also speaks of “a great challenge”. "We are clowns, we work a lot on juggling, circus techniques and here we have a text to work on," he said.

As is customary in the productions of “Lavrar o Mar”, the “Clowns” bring together the local community, in this case Aljezur and Odemira.

Is that Thorsten and Leo live in Aljezur and Enano, in Odemira. “We wanted to continue with this connection to the territory, one of the very important premises of all the work”, explained Giacomo Scalisi.

This will, in fact, be a different spectacle from what you would expect with clowns. The cultural programmer guarantees that there will still be “some clowning”, but with “a bitterer laugh”.

The second edition of the “Lavrar o Mar” program, which has the support of “365Algarve” and CRESC Algarve 2020, comes to an end with “Clowns”. There are 11 shows left behind, since the new circus, with "Klaxon" e "Bestias", to the culinary theater "Folder and Enough" or the concert-oratory "Creed".

For Giacomo Scalisi, the balance is “highly positive”. «The public reacted in a fantastic way and this gives us the possibility to say that “Lavrar o Mar” created a cultural habit that did not exist» in Monchique and Aljezur, two low-density territories.

If you haven't watched any of the shows with this program's stamp, or if you already want to repeat the experience, know that there are still tickets for those who want to go to “Clowns”, especially for sessions in Monchique.

Admission is only for people over 8 years old, with tickets costing 7 euros and can be purchased here
