Beethoven's Hymn of Joy rings again this Saturday at the Palácio de Congressos in Albufeira

Today's concert in Faro Is it sold out

The Orquestra do Algarve returns tomorrow, Saturday, the 11th, to perform Beethoven's 9th Symphony (Hymn to Joy) at the Palácio de Congressos do Algarve (in Salgados, Albufeira), after today having sold out the Teatro das Figuras, in Faro.

This concert marks the 200th anniversary of the most important symphony in the history of music, which is rarely possible to hear live – and which is also the official anthem of the European Union.

This is a project in which Orquestra do Algarve is reinforced with 26 musicians from Orquestra sem Fronteiras, winner of the European Charlemagne Prize for Youth in 2022, in a long-desired collaboration.

This moment is directed by maestro Martim Sousa Tavares and with the participation of Beatriz Maia (soprano), Carolina Figueiredo (mezzo-soprano), Frederico Projecto (tenor), Rui Baeta (baritone) and the Community Choir of Orquestra do Algarve.

The “Hymn to Joy” was adopted in 1985 as the official anthem of the European Union, although in 1972 it was the anthem of the European Council.

The “Hymn to Joy” comes from a poem by Friedrich von Schiller (1759-1805) that Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) incorporates in the fourth movement of the “Ninth”, whose premiere took place on May 7, 1827. Both shared the idealistic view of the human race as a brotherhood. Considered “genius”, this work with
200 years is always heard on Europe Day (9 May).

In Portugal, a version slightly different from Schiller's is known, popularized by Spanish singer Miguel Ríos from his 1970 album “Desperta”, in a version written by Amado Regueiro Rodriguez with arrangements by Argentine Oswaldo Ferraro Gutierrez, having been recorded in 1971 with the Manuel de Falla Orchestra.

The version that everyone knows expresses not only fraternity, but also hope: “Come, sing, dream by singing / Live dreaming of a new sun / In which men will become brothers again […]”.

Tickets for the event cost 15,00 euros and are on sale at BOL Platform, clicking here.
