Municipality of the Year 2016 awardLagos, Loulé, Albufeira and Lagoa are the Algarve's municipalities finalists in the 2016 Municipalities of the Year Award, promoted by UM-Cidades and which aims to recognize and reward good practices with projects implemented by the municipalities themselves.

Os winners by region and the big winner nationally they will be known on June 3, in a ceremony scheduled for the Fort of Beliche, in Sagres, municipality of Vila do Bispo.

«Lagos on the Active Aging Route», from the municipality of Lagos, «Loulé Criativo», from Loulé, Projeto Chapim, from Albufeira, and even «Project Green Cork|Environmental education in an educational and community context», from Lagoa, are the four finalist projects that these Algarve municipalities applied for.

The project "Lakes on the Active Aging Route" means that this municipality assumes itself as being "effectively on the active aging route, as a promoter of practices that enhance autonomy, health, social support, recreational activities, promoting favorable environments for the elderly for improvement of their quality of life'.

The projects “Saúde em Movimento”, “GAPI – Support Office for the Elderly”, “Urban Social Gardens” and “Senior Municipal Council” are practical examples of this senior initiative in Lagos.

This project emerged in 2012, within the scope of the European Year of Active Aging and Solidarity between Generations, and has been enriched over the years, either through the strengthening and coverage of established partnerships, or through the creation of the Senior Municipal Council in 2014.

«Loulé Criativo» is the project with which the Municipality of Loulé competes for the award. It is a commitment to enhance the identity of the territory of the Municipality of Loulé, with creativity and innovation as its driving force.

Creative Loulé Logo«Loulé Criativo» supports the training and activity of artisans and professionals in the creative sector, contributing to the revitalization of traditional arts and to the stimulation of new approaches to intangible heritage. One of the aspects of this initiative is Creative Tourism, and Loulé is the first Portuguese city to join the International Creative Tourism Network.

O Chapim Project, nominated by the Council of Albufeira, was implemented at the end of 2013, with the objective of controlling the proliferation of the pine caterpillar (processionary).

The third edition of the Municipality of the Year Awards, created and carried out by the University of Minho through its UM-Cities unit, this year managed to reach a record number of applications, reaching 93 proposals from all over the country.

The objectives of the “Municipality of the Year Portugal 2016 Awards” are to recognize and reward good practices in projects implemented by municipalities with significant impacts on the territory, economy and society, which promote growth, inclusion and/or sustainability; put on the agenda the theme of territorialization of development, based on the action of the municipalities; give visibility and recognize, in different categories, different realities that include larger cities, but also low density territories in different regions of the country.

In 2015, the municipality of Vila do Bispo was the big winner at the national level, with the Sagres Bird Watching & Nature Activities Festival.
