The PSD will propose Aguiar-Branco to preside over the Assembly of the Republic only in the first two legislative sessions, until September 2026, in an agreement with the PS, the party that will preside over parliament for the rest of the legislature.

The announcement was made by the PSD parliamentary leader, Joaquim Miranda Sarmento, in a statement without the right to questions.

“The PSD will once again present the election for president of AR José Pedro Aguiar-Branco. We understand that Mr Aguiar-Branco, if elected, will fulfill his mandate during two legislative sessions, this one and the next, that is, until September 2026, agreed with the PS that the third and fourth legislative session a deputy will be appointed from the PS, we imagine Mr. Francisco Assis”, he stated.

Miranda Sarmento also left the guarantee that the PSD “always keeps its word” and will vote favorably for the rest of the table: “the four vice-presidents nominated by the four biggest parties” and remaining secretaries and undersecretaries, “thus complying with the Constitution and the Rules”.

The PSD parliamentary leader defended that “it is necessary to overcome this impasse that has been created, it is necessary not to allow parliament and the Government to stand still, to remain in an impasse because there are serious problems in the country”.

“The Portuguese are worried about their day-to-day problems, whether in terms of salaries, pensions, school, health, transport, security and therefore this impasse does not serve the interests of the Portuguese and it is necessary resolve it,” he said.

According to article 14 of the Rules of Procedure, the president of the Assembly of the Republic “is elected by legislature”.

The president “may resign from his position upon communication to the Assembly, with the resignation becoming effective immediately, without prejudice to its subsequent publication in the Gazette”, establishes the Rules, which also read that “in the case of resignation from the position or vacancy, a new election will be held within 15 days.”

“The election of the new President of the Assembly of the Republic is valid for the remaining period of the legislature”, reads the Rules of Procedure.
