Lots of rain and some cold coming

Starting tomorrow and until the end of the week

The gradual weakening of the anticyclone, which brought above-average temperatures and a heat wave recorded in around 30% of meteorological stations in mainland Portugal, will allow the approach of Atlantic depressions and associated frontal surfaces.

This will mean that the next few days will be filled with rain or even snow, wind, thunderstorms, a drop in temperature and sea agitation across the entire continental territory.

According to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere, tomorrow and the day after, the 6th and 7th, there will be an increase in cloudiness, with precipitation occurring, although still weak and especially in the North and Center regions.

On the 8th, Thursday, «with the approach of a depression to the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula and the passage of the associated cold frontal surface, periods of rain are expected, sometimes heavy, initially in Minho and Douro Litoral, extending gradually spread to the rest of the territory”.

The wind will increase in intensity, blowing from the south/southwest with gusts, which, on the 8th and 9th, will reach 60 to 70 km/h in most of the territory, with gusts in the order of 80 to 90 km/h being possible in the North and Central coast and up to 110 km/h in the highlands.

On the 9th, Friday, periods of rain or showers, sometimes heavy, are also expected to occur, which may occasionally be accompanied by thunderstorms and occur in the form of snow in the highest points of Serra da Estrela from the end of afternoon.

The temperature should maintain values above normal for the time of year until the 7th, gradually decreasing the temperature from the 8th, after the passage of the aforementioned cold frontal surface, to values close to normal.

The IPMA also highlights an increase in maritime agitation, with waves from the southwest on the 8th of between 4 and 5 meters, gradually changing to waves from the west/northwest from the 9th.

Taking into account the forecast meteorological situation, IPMA placed 13 districts on yellow warning, due to rain, wind and sea disturbances.

The districts under yellow warning, the least serious on the IPMA scale, begin on Thursday morning in the north, with riverside areas having three warnings, for rain, wind and sea disturbances. Throughout the day, warnings will reach central and southern districts.

The warnings are all valid until 18pm on Thursday. On the map of the continent, only the districts of Beja, Évora, Faro, Portalegre and Santarém.
