Algarve celebrates Carnival with initiatives for all tastes and ages

Programs run until February 14th, Ash Wednesday

Parades with floats, masked balls and lots of entertainment: Carnival will be celebrated in various parts of the Algarve with programs for all tastes.

Albufeira 

In Albufeira, celebrations begin on Carnival Saturday, February 10th, downtown. The parade takes to the streets at 14:30 pm in Cais Herculano square, followed by the party, at 15:30 pm, with Dj Zé Black and the dancers from Companhia Danzarena, on Rua 5 de Outubro.

To end the day, anyone who wants to can stop by the Carnival Ball at Espaço Multiusos de Albufeira (EMA).

On Saturday (the 10th), at 20pm, Duo 00 and Nuno Balbino will take the stage, on Monday (the 64th), the party will take place with Valter Cabrita and Nuno Balbino and finally, on Tuesday, the day 12, Nuno Balbino is once again performing music in a matinee format, from 13pm to 14pm, on a day marked by the Masquerade Competition for young revelers, at 00pm.

Also in the municipality of Albufeira, but in Ferreiras, The Trapalhão Carnival takes place on the 11th and 13th of February, with parades between 14pm and 00pm, on Avenida 17 de Julho.

In addition to several floats and groups on foot, the event also includes traveling entertainment from Circo Dallas, a performance by Ban'Dalila, athletes from Futebol Clube de Ferreiras, Atlético Clube de Albufeira and Clube de MTB Amigos de Albufeira.

On Carnival Sunday, the 11th, highlights also include the artists from Associação Satori. On the 13th, Carnival Tuesday, it's the Al'fanfarre's turn to join the party.

The first day of the parade will also be marked by the presence of the SIC program “Domingão”, which will be live from Ferreiras.

Faro 

 

in the county of Faro, Carnival is designed for children. The parade will take place, rain permitting, on the 9th, starting at 10 am, in Jardim Manuel Bivar.

In this parade, EB1 Jardim de Infância de S. Luís, Bom João, Carmo, Alto Rodes, Ria Formosa, Vale Carneiros, Ferradeira, Areal Gordo, Bordeira and other institutions in the municipality (Refúgio Aboim Ascensão, Associação Arco-Íris, Casa of St. ª Isabel, Centro Infantil da Santa Casa da Misericórdia, Creche, O Relógio, Centro Infantil N.ª Sr.ª do Carmo – CASCD Faro and Estrela do Mar Children's Center).

The route starts at Jardim Manuel Bívar, passes through Rua de Santo António and ends at Praça da Pontinha, Faro.

The parade will be accompanied by Brazilian music, animation and confetti.

Em Border, the party is on the 11th and 12th. On Saturday, at 15pm, the “Traditional Parade” takes place, at 00pm there is a show with “La Plante Mutante”, at the D. Leonor Outdoor Activities Center, and at 17pm there is a dance with Cristiano Martins. On Carnival Sunday, the dance is at 00pm with Tokisom.

 

Lagoa 

In Lagoa, pre-school and primary school children also have a Carnival parade in which they are protagonists. The activity is scheduled for February 1th, between 9 am and 10 pm (once again…if the rain allows).

The Carnival Parade will bring together children from School Groups and Private Social Solidarity Institutions in the municipality and will take place in Ferragudo, Parchal, Mexilhoeira da Carregação, Estômbar, Lagoa, Carvoeiro and Porches.

This year, the theme chosen for the realization of the costumes is “Freedom”, given the celebration of the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April.

Lagos 

 

The Odiáxere Carnival (Lagos) celebrates its 28th edition this year and has activities between the 9th and 14th of February.

This year, the musical entertainment will be provided by Rosinha (11th) and Jorge Guerreiro (13th), in Odiáxere.

In this location, the highlights of the program are the Carnival Assault (on the 10th), the Children's Carnival (on the 11th), the Float Parades (on the 11th and 13th) and, finally, the Burial of Entrudo, on the Ash Wednesday.

In the municipality of Lagos, weather permitting, Friday, the 9th, will be dedicated to the school parade, which brings together Pre-School and 1st Cycle Basic Education students from public schools from both groups ( AE Gil Eanes and AE Júlio Dantas), private schools (Colégio Bambino and Externato Torraltinha) and local IPSS (CASLAS). Students from the Technical Educational Action Course at Escola Secundária Júlio Dantas and the Lagos Study Center (Senior University) will collaborate in the animation of the parade

On the same day, another school parade will take place in Vila da Luz and another in Odiáxere.

 

Loulé 

 

The Loulé Carnival, which this year has the theme “Discovering the SDGs”, returns to the streets on the 11th, 12th and 13th of February.

The parade is made up of 14 floats, more than 600 extras and walks along Avenida José da Costa Mealha, between 15pm and 00pm.

The parade for children from the municipality's schools was scheduled for Friday morning, but was canceled due to the forecast of rain.

In the municipality of Loulé, but in Quarteira, the parade inspired by the theme “Music” will take place on the 10th, 11th and 13th, along Avenida Infante Sagres.

In total, there will be eight floats, six carnival groups and three exhibition points with music.

The children's party starts earlier, on the 9th of February, between 10am and 00pm, (rain permitting), with students from schools and IPSS in the parish parading along Avenida Infante Sagres in the most creative costumes, associated with the theme of this edition.

Carnival ends with the traditional “Entrudo Burial”, on the 14th, at 21 pm, from Rua da Alegria to Praça do Mar.

Em Boliqueime,  The 2nd Children's Carnival Parade takes to the streets, on February 8th, starting at 10 am, with a starting point at the Municipal Pavilion.

The initiative will bring together around 500 children from public and private educational establishments in the parish.

Who prefers to go to Hi, You can count on a party on the 11th and 13th.

On Sunday, the parade starts at 15pm and will be entertained by DJ Paulo Rossi. At 00:21 pm, there is a Ball at Casa do Povo with Valter Cabrita and his band. Also on that day, anyone who wants can participate in the mask competition.

On Shrove Tuesday, there is racing again, at 15 pm, while at 00:21 pm the dance is entertained by Valter Cabrita and Rúben Filipe. At the ball, the corsican prizes will be awarded.

 

Olhão 

 

In the municipality of Olhão, it is in the parish of Moncarapacho that Carnival takes place.

In the year in which it celebrates its 125th anniversary, the carnival parade in this location takes place on the 11th (Sunday) and 13th of February (Tuesday), starting at 15pm, with free entry.

Twelve floats and more than 500 revelers will parade around the circuit, with 20 people expected to be present over the two days of the parade.

With the support of the Union of Parishes of Moncarapacho and Fuseta, Casa do Povo de Moncarapacho also organizes traditional masked balls, between the 9th and 13th of February, starting at 22pm, entertained by the following musicians: Carlos Granito (00) , Sandrine (9), French Luís Filipe (10), with Mask Competition, Duo Reflexo (11) and Cristiano Martins (12), with 'Entrudo do Entrudo'.

 

Portimão 

 

In Portimão, the program is longer and started on the 3rd, lasting until Shrove Tuesday, 13th February.

This year, Carnival's theme is the 50th anniversary of the 25th of April and the celebration of freedom.

The most carnival festivities begin on Sunday, February 11th, the day on which two processions take place simultaneously, starting at 15:30 pm, both in Mexilhoeira Grande and Figueira, with six floats, and in Alvor, with the participation of five vehicles .

The afternoon parade on the 13th (15:30 pm) will bring together, in the riverside area of ​​Portimão, all 16 vehicles decorated with themes alluding to the Carnation Revolution, and, upon returning home, the floats representing the communities of Alvor and Mexilhoeira They will liven up the streets of their hometowns.

In this municipality, there is also no shortage of dances, such as the one at Boa Esperança Atlético Clube Portimonense (10th and 12th February – 21:30 pm; 13th February – 15:00 pm – Children’s matinee parade); Clube União Portimonense (February 10th – 20:30 pm; “Carnival Assault” and dance on February 12th – 21:30 pm); Sociedade Vencedora Portimonense (10 and 12 February – 21:30 pm; 13 February – 18:00 pm); Sporting Glória ou Morte Portimonense (3, 10, 12 and 13 February – 21:30 pm); Pedra Mourinha Sports and Recreational Club (9, 10, 11 and 12 February – 21:30 pm), Sociedade Recreativa Figueirense (11 and 13 February – 17:30 pm); Mexilhoeirense Instruction and Recreation Club (11th and 13th February – 17:30 pm) and Cultural and Sports Association of Ladeira do Vau (10th and 12th February – 21:00 pm).

The third edition of Percussion Days will also be part of the program, between the 9th and 12th.

 

Vila Real de Santo António 

 

In the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António, Carnival also passes through Vila Nova de Cacela and Monte Gordo.

As in most municipalities, the festivities begin, rain permitting, on Friday, the 9th, at 10 am, with the children's parade, at Largo Manuel Cabanas, in Vila Nova de Cacela, in the West Zone of the Casino, in Monte Gordo, and in Praça Marquês de Pombal, in Vila Real de Santo António.

The program is joined by a series of dances: at the Centro Cultural António Aleixo, in VRSA, in the Poente do Casino area, in Monte Gordo, and at Largo Manuel Cabanas, in Vila Nova de Cacela.

In VRSA, the dances take place on the 10th (Acordeanima), 11th (Duo Reflexo), 12th (Sérgio Conceição) and 17th (Nelson Santos and piñata), at 21:30 pm, at the Cultural Center. Entries cost 3,5 euros, but children between 6 and 12 years old only pay 2,5 euros. The amount goes to the municipality's associations and tickets can be purchased on the same day on site.

Already in Monte Gordo, the dances (with free entry) take place in the tent installed on the marginal avenue, on the 10th, 11th and 12th of February, always at 22pm. The Carnival Tuesday matinee and the Children's Masquerade competition, on February 00th, are scheduled for 13pm.

In the parish of Vila Nova de Cacela, the festivities are scheduled for the 11th, Sunday, from 16pm, at Largo Manuel Cabanas.
