Authorities record nearly 5 accidents and 17 deaths between December 15th and 26th

The road safety campaign “The best gift is to be present” runs until January 2nd

Between December 15th and 26th, the National Road Safety Authority recorded 4.852 accidents, resulting in 17 deaths, four more than in the same period last year, and more than 1.400 injuries.

In a statement released today, the authority states that during the Christmas period this year there were 307 fewer accidents than in the same period of 2022. The total number of accidents resulted in 1.492 injuries, 137 more than in the same period last year.

Of these 1.492 injuries, 80 were serious (the same number as the previous year) and 1.412 were minor (137 more than the previous year).

The 17 fatalities recorded between December 15th and 26th resulted from accidents in the districts of Beja (3), Portalegre (3), Coimbra (2) and Setúbal (2), with one death occurring in Braga, Leiria, Lisbon, Porto, Santarém, Vila Real and the autonomous region of the Azores.

In the remaining districts of the country – Aveiro, Bragança, Castelo Branco, Évora, Faro, Guarda, Viana do Castelo and Viseu – and in the autonomous region of Madeira, no fatalities were recorded.

According to the note, the fatal accidents occurred on the national road network (12), between national roads (7), motorways (3) and main routes (2), and on the municipal network (4), in streets (3) and municipal road (1) and one on the Azores road network.

Compared to the same days in 2022, accidents decreased by 6,0%, while total victims increased by 10,3%.

Between December 15th and 26th, 7,2 million vehicles were inspected, either in person, by the National Republican Guard (GNR) and the Public Security Police (PSP), or through radar control, by the GNR, the PSP and the National Road Safety Authority (ANSR).

Of the total vehicles inspected, 48,9 infractions were recorded, mainly related to speeding and driving under the influence of alcohol, which led to the arrest of 681 people.

The road safety campaign “The best gift is to be present” is running until January 02, 2024, an initiative by ANSR, in partnership with the GNR, PSP and more than 240 entities, which appeals to all Portuguese people to travel in New Year's Eve period, “adopt safe behavior on the road, namely, traveling without rushing, without alcohol, without cell phones and stopping to rest”.
