Algarve will have another 8,9 million to rehabilitate water supply systems

Fund reinforcement was approved this Friday

AMAL will have an additional 8,9 million euros for the rehabilitation of water supply systems in decline at regional level, a sum that will add to the 35 million already foreseen in the measure managed by the Algarve Intermunicipal Community, within the scope of the Algarve Water Efficiency Plan, with the support of the PRR – Recovery and Resilience Plan.

This increase in funding was approved at the Intermunicipal Council meeting, held this Friday morning, AMAL announced.

The measure “aims at rehabilitating failing supply systems, with the aim of reducing real water losses. So far, 31 applications have been approved, corresponding to an investment of 21 million euros».

In practice, what was approved at today's Intermunicipal Council Ordinary Meeting was the addition to the Financing Contract relating to the “Algarve Regional Water Efficiency Plan: SM1 – Reducing water losses in the urban sector”, concluded between the Mission Structure “Recover Portugal” and AMAL, through which the initially planned allocation of 8,9 million euros was increased by 35 million euros for the rehabilitation of failing water supply systems aimed at reducing real water losses.

The decision on the applications presented rests with a Management Committee composed of the Intermunicipal Community, the Portuguese Environment Agency, represented by the Administration of the Algarve Hydrographic Region, and the University of Algarve.

At the end of the project, it is expected that 125 kilometers of water supply network will be rehabilitated, contributing to a reduction of 2 cubic hectometers (hm3) in the demand for water in natural systems.

Within the scope of this measure, AMAL has also been developing other initiatives, «such as training actions on reducing water losses in the urban sector, aimed at the 19 Management Entities of low water supply systems, more specifically the municipalities and municipal companies».
