Three-day school strike called by Stop starts today

Between the 5th and the 12th of May, the union will hold another strike, which coincides with the start of the benchmarking tests

A new strike by teachers and school employees convened by the Union of All Education Professionals (Stop) begins today, in protest against the new competition regime and for the recovery of all service time.

The stoppage, which will last until Friday, starts about a week after the end of the indefinite strike that started at the end of last year, called by the same union.

Teachers and non-teachers contest the new competition regime, approved by the Government in March, and insist again on recovering all the time of service that was frozen, as well as on improving working conditions and wages.

As in the previous strike, the arbitral tribunal once again decreed minimum services for the stoppage of the Stop, so that schools ensure part of their functioning, including at least three hours of classes/daily teaching time per class, in order to guarantee , weekly, the coverage of the different disciplines.

Following successive decisions to enact minimum services, a public petition was launched in defense of “a generalized action of disobedience” to “illegal minimum services”, which, according to the prosecutor, had gathered, until Sunday, more than three thousand signatures.

The teachers consider that the minimum services are illegal and call into question the constitutional right to strike.

The new Stop strike takes place following the protest, in the national demonstration of the 25th of April, in defense of the rights of workers and for the public school.

Between the 5th and the 12th of May, the union will carry out another strike, which coincides with the start of the benchmarking tests.

At the same time, the district strike called by the platform of nine union organizations, which includes the national federations of Education and Teachers (FNE and Fenprof), continues today in Portalegre.

The stoppage – which has been covering all districts in reverse alphabetical order for a week, from Viseu to Aveiro, ends on May 12 in Lisbon.

Teachers and school staff also started, on Monday, a camp in Rossio, in Lisbon, which has since moved to Largo Camões, where it should remain until 1 May.
