Minister Maria do Céu Antunes presented the rehabilitation work on the Vila Real de Santo António waterfront

Works represent an investment of 600 thousand euros, expected to be completed in June

The ceremony for the presentation of the contract for the rehabilitation of the Vila Real de Santo António waterfront was attended, this Wednesday, March 1, by the Minister of Agriculture and Food, within the scope of the «Government + Next» initiative.

According to the VRSA City Council, the intervention represents an investment of 585 thousand euros, co-financed by the Interreg program and the “ATLAZUL” cross-border project, and includes the construction of a new marginal retention in rockfill along the riverfront of Vila Real de Santo António, as well as the installation of new fenders and stairs on the existing pier.

The works also include the repair of the existing marginal retention structure on the Guadiana River, as well as the installation of new ticket offices and toilets.

For Minister Maria do Céu Antunes, the undertaking allows «the construction of a collective future» and represents the «congregation of efforts between the public and private domain».

On the other hand, it highlighted the strategic nature of the work, taking into account the enhancement of the city's waterfront and the thousands of international passengers and vehicles transported on the Guadiana maritime border.

For the president of the Chamber Álvaro Araújo, the intervention consolidates the physical structure of the Guadiana River and represents one of the challenges for the global requalification of the north zone of the city, considered «one of the great objectives of this executive».

According to Sérgio Faias, chairman of the board of directors of Docapesca, the contract for the rehabilitation of the Vila Real de Santo António waterfront is divided into four intervention sections.

The first (110 meters) focuses on the Fishing Port and the existing retention structure, while the second (300 meters) covers the extension of the commercial wharf. The third and fourth intervention sections (35 and 120 meters) comprise the area between the commercial wharf and the recreational port and foresee the new marginal retention in rockfill.
