Government gives new monthly support of 30 euros to poorer families

Payment of this support will be automatic and will be made on a quarterly basis.

Finance Minister Fernando Medina announced today that the Government will give a new monthly support of 30 euros to the poorest families to compensate for the rise in the cost of living.

According to Medina, the payment of this support will be automatic and will be made on a quarterly basis, in effect between January and December of this year.

Thus, the Government is expected to pay the first quarter support soon.

According to information provided today by the Ministry of Finance, this support will reach around one million households and will have an increase of 15 euros per child (reaching 1,1 million children and young people).

In total, this support for the most vulnerable families will cost 580 million euros.

The measure was announced today at a joint press conference by the ministers of the Presidency, Mariana Vieira da Silva, Finance, Fernando Medina, and Social Security, Ana Mendes Godinho, which is taking place in Lisbon, to present the new aid package to mitigate the rising cost of living.

At the press conference, the Government alsoannounced a VAT rate of 0% for the essential food basket, as well as an additional 1% increase for civil servants, among other measures.
