Portimão marks International Volunteer Day with sharing between young people

“Generation XXI” currently has 11 international volunteers from Spain, Italy and Turkey

Portimão will mark the International Volunteer Day, next Monday, December 5th, with a meeting between young volunteers from several countries and the revelation of the winners of the fourth edition of the Municipal Volunteer Prize.

The date will also celebrate youth volunteering, with a conviviality taking place in the hall of the Museum of Portimão, scheduled for 16 pm, with the sharing of testimonies and volunteering experiences, interspersed with musical moments, within the scope of the “Generation XXI” programme. ”, created in partnership by the Municipality of Portimão and the Dypall Network and which marks its fifth anniversary on this day.

The “Generation XXI” program arose from the need to energize young people and make Portimão a regional reference in the implementation of youth policies and incentive to citizenship and active participation, creating opportunities for learning, training and volunteering at local and international level.

“Generation XXI” currently has 11 international volunteers from Spain, Italy and Turkey; five former volunteers, of Italian and Polish nationality, now live in Portimão.

The meeting, which will last until 18 pm, will be attended by volunteers and representatives of partner organizations of this program, such as the cases of MAPS – – Support Movement for the AIDS Problem, Portimão Surf Clube, GRATO – Support Group for Drug Addicts , City Council and Franjinhas – Animal Protection Association, and will count on the participation of the Portimão Music Academy, which will be in charge of various musical moments, with group dynamics also being planned, namely a quizzes about volunteering.

From 18 pm onwards, the ceremony will take place in the Museum's auditorium to award the distinctions relating to the 00 Municipal Volunteer Award in the individual and collective categories, with the presentation of all the projects that apply and the revelation of the winners.

The ceremony will feature performative moments by Academia Dança Mais, while the closure will be in charge of the mayor of Portimão.

Already in its fourth edition, the award was instituted in 2018 by the municipality and since then it has distinguished projects in the areas of solidarity, health, environment, social economy, education and training that promote the improvement of the quality of life of children, young people, the elderly, citizens people with disabilities or other people in vulnerable situations, having awarded last year the projects “SER na Demência” (collective category) and “Sensorial Garden” (single category).

Created in June 2021 by the Municipality, the “Volunteering Portimão” platform provides a meeting point between those who wish to use their free time and skills in favor of community projects and local entities in search of the support of volunteers.

In a first phase, entities should access the platform and fill out the registration form available, indicating the areas of intervention and the target audience, while the individual person who wants to join can register on here, becoming part of the scholarship managed by the local authority services, which will take into account the person's profile and existing needs.
