Hospital Particular de Gambelas has unique robot in Portugal

According to the HPA Health Group, the robot «uses a high-pressure jet of water, which clears the urethra and improves urinary symptoms»

The Hospital Particular de Gambelas, part of the HPA Saúde Group, announced this Tuesday, December 6, a treatment for Benign Prostate Hyperplasia, with a new robot.

This is indeed the only hospital in Portugal with a robot, used to treat urinary symptoms in men, which can be used in all prostate sizes, preserving sex life and continence.

According to the HPA Health Group, the robot «uses a high-pressure jet of water, which clears the urethra and improves urinary symptoms. This technology is an alternative for the treatment of Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia, a very common pathology in men over 50 years old and which is associated with multiple urinary symptoms».

«The Aquabeam robotic system allows the ablation of prostatic tissue (BPH) using a very high-speed, high-pressure water jet (10.000 PSI), without using any type of thermal energy, unlike classic endoscopic surgeries (P-TUR) or with a laser", he adds.

According to Professor Tiago Rodrigues, who is a urologist, «in addition to the precision and effectiveness that this robot gives us, it allows us to carry out more interventions in a day, in a safer way and with better results, and it is also very rewarding to watch the rapid recovery of patients».

“Once all the parameters are integrated, the robot performs the procedure quickly, predictably and precisely (less than 5 minutes – current methods take around 1 hour and 30 minutes). After finishing, a catheter is placed in the bladder, which is usually removed the next day and the patient is discharged after 24 hours. In addition to the shorter hospital stay, the preservation of sexual life, namely ejaculation, and less blood loss are important benefits», explains the HPA Health Group.

César Santos, director of the HPA Group and director of the HPA Gambelas Unit, says that «our concern is always about innovation that allows us to offer quality services to our users».

«During the year 2022, we were the first unit in the country to perform “Prostatic Biopsies by Micro-Ecography” and “Prostatic Transrectal Micro-Echography” in high definition. We have also started “Low Intensity Shockwave” therapy for erectile dysfunction. Now this new robot reinforces our position on the level of excellence in the care we provide», he concludes.
