CHUA expands the intervention of the psychosocial support team to the elderly

Four Residential Structures for Elderly People in the Algarve region,

The Centro Hospitalar Universitário do Algarve (CHUA) will extend the psychological support activity, which has existed since 2018 at CHUA, to four Residential Structures for the Elderly in the Algarve region (ERPI). 

According to the hospital, the supported structures will be the Santa Casa da Misericórdia de Faro, ERPI Torre de Natal, ERPI Candeias Neto and ERPI Cultural and Social Support Association of Olhão (ACASO).

The presentation of the project «Emotional, Social and Spiritual Support in Residential Structures for Elderly People», as well as the signing of the respective agreements between the entities, will take place tomorrow, September 2, at 11:00 am, at the Hospital Unit of Faro of the CHUA.

The ceremony will be attended by the CHUA Board of Directors and the Psychosocial Support Team (EAPS), representatives of the “la Caixa” Foundation, Social Security, the Order of Psychologists, the CHUA Psychology Service, the Regional Administration of Health in the Algarve (ARS Algarve) and those responsible for the ERPI's.

“With the signing of these agreements, we will provide psychologist support for activity in these Residential Structures for the Elderly, with the objective of offering comprehensive support to residents with advanced diseases, their families, as well as professionals from the institutions, also ensuring a psychosocial and spiritual support", explains Giovanni Cerullo, technical director of EAPS CHUA.

Since November 2018, CHUA has been one of the recipient entities of the Comprehensive Support Project for People with Advanced Illnesses within the scope of the Humaniza program of the “la Caixa” Foundation, with the constitution of a Psychosocial Support Team (EAPS CHUA), made up of a total of five professionals and a technical director, whose objective is Psychosocial Support to patients and families with advanced diseases, followed in palliative care by the Palliative Care Teams of CHUA and by the Community Support Teams in Palliative Care of ACES Barlavento and Central.
