Portimão birthing block closes from 21pm today to 00am tomorrow

Gynecology and Obstetrics emergencies will also be conditioned.

The delivery block at Hospital de Portimão will be closed from 21:00 pm this Sunday, September 25th, until 9:00 am tomorrow, the 26th. The issue is, once again, the lack of pediatricians.

Confirmation of termination was given to the Sul Informação by Paulo Neves, administrator of the Centro Hospitalar e Universitário do Algarve (CHUA).

“It was not possible to fill in the scale”, he summarized.

According to Paulo Neves, the urgencies of Gynecology and Obstetrics, in Portimão, will also be conditioned, only attending pregnant women up to 22 weeks.

The care, for the rest, will be done by non-specialist doctors.

Already in Faro, “everything is working normally”: both the emergency room and the delivery unit.

«The ideal would be for everything to be working, but it is our reality and, within the contingency plan, we have to make choices», explained Paulo Neves.

The closing of birthing blocks, moreover, is nothing new in the Algarve, where, essentially during the summer, CHUA was forced to take this measure due to the lack of doctors.
