Port of Sines climbs three places in the World Top 100

It occupies the 95th position

The Port of Sines registered a rise of three places in the World Top 100, occupying the 95th position of the “World Top Container Ports 2022” of the specialized magazine “Container Management”.

According to the Administration of the Ports of Sines and Algarve (APS), the Container Terminal of the Port of Sines ended 2021 with «the best brand ever», exceeding 1.8 million TEU, which corresponds to a growth 13%, allowing it to climb three positions in the ranking internationally.

«The expansion works aimed at doubling the handling capacity of the Container Terminal (Terminal XXI) to 4,1 million are proceeding at a good pace, with the first stage, which includes an additional 204 meters of quay length, having been completed in June. Since the terminal is now capable of handling three megacarriers at the same time, it is expected that there will be an increase in annual turnover. Upon completion of the works, which are the result of a private investment of 660,9 million euros by PSA Sines, the Terminal's concessionaire, it will be possible to operate four megacarriers», emphasizes the APS in a note.

While railway operations are expected to increase, the construction and improvement of rail access to the terminal has also been promoted. Furthermore, according to the same administration, the Government is working to strengthen the rail link between Sines and the Spanish border, “which will allow the port to serve Iberian importers and exporters more efficiently”.

One of the main objectives of the port's Strategic Plan for the next ten years is to conquer 8% of the Iberian market, thus doubling its share of traffic to and from the port. hinterland.
