Portimonense went to Madeira to win the Marítimo categorically

Paulo Sérgio's gang provisionally equaled FC Porto at the top of the table

Wellinton Júnior scored the winning goal

This Sunday, August 27, Portimonense beat Marítimo, by 0-1, in a game of the 4th round of the I Liga, played at Estádio do Marítimo, in Funchal.

O hero from the Algarve was the Brazilian forward Welinton Júnior who, in the 43rd minute, scored the only goal, with a right-footed shot from the heart of the area to the top left corner, following Fahd Moufi's assistance with a cross into the area. The scoreboard was opened, in a result that would remain until the end.

But don't think that the Algarve's task had been easy until then. There were four opportunities missed by Marítimo in the first half, against many others by Portimonense who, on the third attempt, scored.

In the second half, Marítimo, playing at home, pressed on, getting two good opportunities in the 50th and 51st minutes, but failed to achieve them.

This forced the Madeiran coach to change the team, in the 56' – first Moisés Mosquera took the field, replacing Zainadine Júnior, due to his injury, then Jesús Ramírez replaced Pablo Moreno.

Ten minutes later, without being able to change the scoreboard and with Portimonense pressing, Marítimo made a third substitution: Antonio Zarzana left, Bruno Xadas came on.

In the 70th minute, the controversial move of the game arose, after great confusion in the Portimonense area, involving André Vidigal, Tagueu and Winck. Suspecting a possible penalty in favor of Marítimo, referee Manuel Mota resorted to VAR, but this decided that there had been no penalty and the game continued.

Portimonense then decided to do everything to secure the precious victory and, in the 73', made two substitutions: Rui Gomes and Klismahn replaced Yago and Ewerton, respectively.

Exhausting his chances of changing the team, Marítimo also responded with two exchanges: Fábio China and Lucho Vega exchange with Léo Andrade and Diogo Mendes. But even that was not worth the Madeira coach, who still saw the fans waving white handkerchiefs at him. The Madeira team is in the 18th and last place, without any points.

Until the end of the match, Portimonense still had several opportunities, but was wasteful and did not take advantage of them. After 9 minutes of added time, the game ended with the supremacy of the Portimão team.

Portimonense won its third consecutive victory and provisionally equaled, at the top of the standings, the champion FC Porto, which hosts Rio Ave this Sunday.
