Thirteen months after arriving at Porto d'Abrigo do Zoomarine, a loggerhead turtle is now returning to the sea, with a satellite system that will allow it to be monitored for the next 425 days.

The sea turtle, meanwhile named Salina, was rescued in June last year, near the banks of the Guadiana River in Azinhal, by a fisherman.

Due to the risk of developing pneumonia "by aspiration (because it got caught in the nets and could have, inadvertently, inhaled water), this fisherman, Ricardo Gonçalves, asked the team of specialists from Porto d'Abrigo do Zoomarine to collect it, in order to observation, treatment and subsequent return to the wild», says Zoomarine in a press release.

The turtle is a specimen of the species Caretta caretta, the most common in Portuguese waters, which arrived at Porto d'Abrigo with 63 cm and 38,7 kg, and will return with 67 cm and 51,8 kg.

The return will take place on board the NRP Cassiopeia, which will leave at 8:30 am, at the Commercial Pier of Faro, and bound for 12 nautical miles (22 kilometers) to the south.

With the turtle, it will follow a satellite system, coupled to the carapace, which will allow the animal to be monitored over the next 425 days.
