Sardine Festival is «sustainable gastronomic event»

To mark the premiere of the Sardine Festival, the Municipality of Portimão promotes the recreation of the traditional

Recycling, a reusable cup and the transformation of organic waste into fertilizer. The Sardine Festival, which takes place from the 3rd to the 7th of August, in the Riverside area of ​​Portimão, will be a «sustainable gastronomic event». 

The reusable cup can be purchased at exhibitors in the agri-food area, in taverns and bars at the price of 1 euro.

There will also be the use of dishes and cutlery made of sustainable materials, and several recycling bins and awareness signs will be placed throughout the enclosure, and environmental initiatives will be promoted and publicized.

This strategy also includes training and awareness-raising actions aimed at waste producers (restaurants and agri-foodstuffs) and at volunteers who will collaborate in collecting table trays and sorting waste.

As part of the current awareness campaign for the selective collection of organic waste, under the motto “It's time!” and integrated in the “Portimão Valoriza” movement, EMARP will be present at the Festival with a 'stand', where residents of Portimão can find out everything about the project, namely check if they are in the pilot area and, if so, raise their seven liter bucket.

The project, which aims to implement a selective collection system for organic waste in the municipality, developed within the scope of an application approved by the PO SEUR (Operational Program for Sustainability and Efficiency in the Use of Resources), started first with restaurants, schools and private institutions. of social solidarity in the parishes of Portimão and Alvor and has now been extended to the residential population, through the activation of 144 proximity containers, next to the ecological islands.

The objectives of the pilot project, which covers 13.836 accommodation units, equivalent to 19.353 inhabitants (35 percent of the population), are to create conditions for the Municipality of Portimão to comply with the obligation to selectively collect bio waste from 1 Kaneiro 2024, the date on which selective collection or its separation and recycling at source becomes mandatory for all Portuguese municipalities.

To mark the premiere of the Sardine Festival, the Municipality of Portimão promotes, from 9 am on next Tuesday, August 00nd, the recreation of the traditional sardine basket unloading on the city pier, sardine that will later be made into a popular sardine , ending this special day in a sunset with music from other times, in charge of the Lucky Duckies.

On this occasion, the hustle and bustle of the old fish market will be evoked, with the mooring of the trawler “Arrifana” and the envoy “Moira” and the participation of fifty extras, who will play the role of fishermen, stevedores, buyers, salting women. and restless children, who gave life and color to the pier, broadcast online on official website of the municipality.

After two years of interruption due to the pandemic, the Sardinha Festival returns to the riverside area of ​​Portimão, with a renewed image and a diversified program.

For five intense days, roasted sardines dripping on bread will be queen again, accompanied by boiled potatoes and Algarve salad, served in the various restaurants in the area between bridges and in the stalls of local associations and clubs, which offer more than a thousand seats. seated to taste this gastronomic ex-libris.

«The entire riverside area, between the Portimão Museum and the old Lota, will be full of interesting attractions, from handicrafts to sweets, with lots of street entertainment and music, highlighting the national artists who will be on the main stage: João Leote with the guest Marisa Liz (day 3); David Fonseca (day 4); Bárbara Tinoco (day 5); Wet Bed Gang (day 6); and David Carreira (7th)», says the Portimão City Council.

In addition to the venue that will have entertainment on the Sardinha stage, next to the restaurant, and the main stage, there will also be musical entertainment in the bandstand at Praça Manuel Teixeira Gomes and in Jardim 1.º de Dezembro, while the children's area Petinga Park will attract the little ones to the area of ​​the old Lota de Portimão.
