New cultural routes discussed in Lagos

The seminar wanted to «explore, together with the community, alternative proposals for cultural routes based on more sustainable tourism»

The participatory seminar “Lagos: Culture and Built Heritage – Diversification of Cultural Routes” took place at the Auditorium Paços do Concelho Séc. XXI, an initiative that integrates the SuSTowns project, of which Lagos is a pilot city, and led to the debate of new cultural routes.

The project has, according to the municipality, carried out “various activities in the municipality of Lacobrigens, aiming to explore, together with the community, alternative proposals for cultural routes based on more sustainable tourism”.

The seminar was opened by Sara Coelho, councilor of the Lagos City Council, and by Adão Flores, from the SuSTowns team. Sara Coelho referred to «the importance of tourism sustainability in a win-win logic», in which the destination is promoted from a tourist point of view, but reinforcing the local identity and the involvement of the
community with their land.

Adão Flores already mentioned the fundamental role of municipalities as frontline tour operators, which must be “taken over and reinforced”.

Some proposals for new cultural routes were then presented, both for visitors and residents, based on concepts of “sustainability, inclusion and aesthetics” (New European Bauhaus).

Sensory Route Stops “Mão de Fátima”, Architectural Heritage Route Cast and/or Wrought Iron (romanticism and art nouveau), Military Tourism Route (land, naval and underwater), Religious Heritage Route, Route of Pirates and Corsairs and Literary Route by Sophia de Mello Breyner Andresen were some of the projects presented.

«The new proposals will now be refined for a new presentation and consultation with the public, which will be announced shortly. Its eventual implementation will make it possible to diversify and decentralize the cultural offer in the municipality, allowing both tourists and residents to learn more about Lagos and its history», concludes the municipality of Lagos.

O SuSTowns – Enhancing Sustainable Tourism in Small Fascinating Med Towns is financed by the ERDF and the IPA and involves seven countries (Albania, Croatia, Slovenia, Spain, Greece, Italy and Portugal) and eighteen localities, including Lagos, as a stakeholder of the University of Algarve, one of the partner entities of the project.
