Lídia Jorge presents her book of chronicles at the Loulé Library

The theme of women and their loneliness is a central concern of Lídia Jorge's work.

The book “Em Todos os Sentidos”, by the writer Lídia Jorge, will be presented at the Loulé Municipal Library, on the 25th of May, at 21 pm. This is the winning work, in 00, of the Crónicas e Dispersos Literários Grand Prize promoted by the Portuguese Association of Writers and Loulé City Council.

The book will be presented to the public by Sandra Boto, in a session held within the scope of readings carried out by the Loulé Reading Club.

“Em Todos os Sentidos”, a set of 41 chronicles that Lídia Jorge wrote and read, over the course of a year, to the microphones of radio Antena 2, “corresponds to that definition – they are chronicles that face the fury of the contemporary world, interpreting its challenges, dangers and simulacra with a sharp critical eye. But the uniqueness of these intervention pages stems, above all, from the fact that the author is able to bring together, on the same stage of reflection, critical thinking about reality and the subjective discourse of intimate memory, with a deeply felt look. Inside this book, there are unforgettable pages about human life».

In the introduction that opens this book, Lídia Jorge defines the chronicle as a tribute to the god who makes the grains of sand slide, looking at us sideways. And she adds: «As we cannot beat Time, we write texts that challenge it, which we call chronicles».

Portuguese novelist and short story writer, Lídia Jorge was born in 1946, in Boliqueime. She lived through the most troubled years of the Colonial War in Africa. She was a member of the High Authority for Social Communication and, among other positions she has held, is now State Councilor.

He debuted with the publication of “O Dia dos Prodígios”, in 1980, one of the most emblematic books of post-revolution Portuguese literature. Since then, he has published several titles in the fields of novels, short stories, essays and theater.

In 1988, “A Costa dos Murmúrios” opened the doors to international recognition, and was later adapted to film by Margarida Cardoso.

Among many others, titles such as “O Vale da Paixão”, “O Vento Whistling in the Cranes”, “Combateremos a Sombra” or “Os Memoráveis”, a work that has been considered a powerful metaphor of the Portuguese drift of the last decades .

His books have been awarded the main national prizes, some of them for his work as a whole, such as the Latinity Prize, the Grand Prize of the Portuguese Society of Authors – Millenium BCP, or the 2015 Vergílio Ferreira Prize. Abroad, among others , Lídia Jorge won in 2006 the first edition of the prestigious ALBATROS award from the Günter Grass Foundation and, in 2015, the Luso-Spanish Culture Grand Prix, the XXIV DST Literature Grand Prix and was a finalist for the 2019 Médicis Prize.

In 2019, he published his first work of poetry, “O Livro das Tréguas”, and the chronicles that he read over the course of a year on the microphones of Antena 2 were, in 2020, gathered in the book “Em Todos os Sentidos”.
