There's a "Max Shark" helping researchers get to know the ocean better

CIMA das UAlg's Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) gained an official name

“Tubarão Max” is the new official name of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) of the Center for Marine and Environmental Research (CIMA) of the University of Algarve, responsible for collecting periodic information about the ocean, which has been in service since the beginning of 2019 .

The name was chosen by the students Escola Básica da Lejana (Faro), who were challenged to name the vehicle by João Janeiro and Lara Mills, researchers at CIMA, within the scope of the CIU3A, NAUTILES e AEROS.

According to the researchers, “the new generation of oceanographers loved the challenge and after a short talk about what it means to be an oceanographer and the need to better understand the ocean, some interesting names began to emerge from their creative minds. In the end, Shark Max was the most voted name by the class».

CIMA, in cooperation with the Navy, is using AUV technology “to periodically collect valuable information about the ocean, which will be used to better understand regional ocean dynamics, develop more accurate forecasts to support the blue economy and security of the region and assess climate trends», according to UAlg.
