Bus leaves Olhão to rescue group of Ukrainian women and children in Poland

This will be the first transport organized by the municipality, a situation “that will be reassessed in the coming days”

A bus, with a translator and a nurse, will leave at dawn this Thursday, March 3, from Olhão, bound for Poland to rescue a group of women and children with connections to the Ukrainian community residing in this Algarve municipality. 

According to the Câmara de Olhão, «the entire reception process will later be monitored by the competent authorities and with a strong involvement of the Municipal Social Action».

This will be the first transport organized by the municipality, a situation “that will be reassessed in the coming days, to consider the need to reinforce this aid”.

On another front, and in conjunction with the Association of Ukrainians in the Algarve, the Municipality will also collect essential goods.

Donations can be delivered to the former Bela Olhão building, next to the fishing port, until the 10th of March, between 9:30 am and 11:00 am and 21:00 pm and 22:30 pm. The collection is coordinated by the Fire and Civil Protection Office.

According to the municipality, boots and thermal clothing (socks and underwear, for men, preferably large sizes), sleeping bags, blankets and blankets, non-perishable and uncooked food (canned goods, preserves, snacks, dry biscuits, tea, coffee, sugar), baby hygiene items (wipes, diapers), basic medical equipment (swabs, bandages) and first-aid supplies.

António Pina, mayor of Olhão, underlines that «the Ukrainian community in Olhão is one of the most important and respected».

“We could not fail to say present when your compatriots are going through an ordeal of this nature. I am sure that, once again, the people of Olhão will join en masse in this movement of international solidarity in favor of victims of war in Ukraine», he concludes.
