«Mãos de Fátima» in Lagos were a case study in Accessible Tourism

the scientific article The symbolism of the door knocker “Hand of Fatima”: a proposal of sensory tourist experiences in the city of Lagos” has just been published, announced the lacobrigense local authority this Tuesday, the 14th of December.

This article is part of the program “Summer with Science 2020 – Accessible and Inclusive Tourism”, in which the city of Lagos received researchers from the Research Center for Tourism, Sustainability and Well-being (CinTurs) and from the Superior Institute of Engineering (ISE) of the University of the Algarve (UAlg).

The result of the investigation was based on «the work carried out by the UAlg team, in which the municipality of Lagos was chosen as a case study in Accessible Tourism», explains the municipality.

As a partner entity of SusTowns, the municipality of Lagos «was involved in this project from the beginning, in which 13 young researchers developed field work focused on the analysis of the building, identification of notable elements of popular architecture, evaluation and proposal of cultural routes, diagnosis of the potential of Birdwatching and Bird by Ear in the city, study on proximity tourism, among other themes», emphasizes the City Council.

Through this action, the aim was “to enable research students to consider accessible and inclusive tourism across their professional activities, as well as to stimulate the creation of new tourist products, more niche and less massified”.

This project met the 2027 Tourism Strategy and in particular the Valuing the Territory and Communities axis, which promotes the urban regeneration of cities and regions and the sustainable tourist development of territories, spreading the need to trigger urban regeneration operations in historic centers, urban areas, as well as preserving authenticity and promoting affordable tourism in cities.
