camera of Faro and CCDR do Algarve express regret for the death of Fernando Reis

The director of Jornal do Algarve died aged 66

The Chamber of Faro and the presidency of the Algarve's Regional Coordination and Development Commission (CCDR) expressed this Monday their regret at the death of Fernando Reis, director of Jornal do Algarve, a reference in the Algarve press and a "convinced regionalist".

This last facet of the entrepreneur, professor and journalist, who died on saturday at age 66, at the Hospital of Faro, and whose funeral took place today, is highlighted by both entities.

"The disappearance of Fernando Reis, dean of Algarve journalism and a convinced regionalist who headed one of the main headlines in the Algarve's regional press, leaves the region, and in particular the Media sector, in mourning," says the Chamber of Faro.

The presidency of the Algarve CCDR, in turn, emphasizes that Fernando Reis assumed the leadership of Jornal do Algarve «in the eighties of the last century, with the firm purpose of defending the legacy of José Barão and the other founders of Jornal do Algarve as main herald of the Algarve and of the causes of the Algarve, namely of regionalization».

Fernando de Sant'Águeda Gutierres Reis, born in Vila Real de Santo António, had a degree in History, having been a secondary school teacher for some years in schools in his homeland and in Loulé.

In 1983, he founded Viprensa, a company that became the owner of Jornal do Algarve, having been its director since then, although at first alternating with José Lança.

The municipality of Faro and the CCDR address «the most heartfelt condolences» to the family, friends and employees of Jornal do Algarve.
