The Sagres Fortress is already the most visited national monument in the South of the Tagus and is in the top 3 in the country, but it is close to becoming even more attractive for visitors, with the inauguration of the new Multimedia Exhibition Center of the Discoveries, which should take place "by the end of the first half of 2022".

Second revealed to Sul Informação Adriana Nogueira, Regional Director of Culture of the Algarve, the works are proceeding at a good pace, both with regard to the work itself, as well as the backstage work of creating the contents of the new center.

“I have no doubt that, as things go, everything will end on schedule. I really believe that the inauguration can take place by the end of the first half of 2022», he said.

From that moment on, the Fortress of Sagres, which is already the «most visited monument in the South of the Tagus» and which «walks there between the second and third most visited at national level», will have a new point of interest.

«This national monument will become even more attractive, not least because we will have a first floor that will host temporary exhibitions, which will encourage the coming of visitors who have not yet seen the exhibition that is on display», believes the regional director of Culture of the Algarve .

«The visitor will see the exhibition center and the temporary exhibition. In a while, when you return to Sagres, you might think: I haven't seen the new exhibition yet. It can be another way to attract people. Having a good and wide exhibition space, like the one we have there, is important», he believes.

On Wednesday of last week, Adriana Nogueira hosted the monument that is overseen by the Regional Directorate of Culture of the Algarve (DRCAlg), and provided a guided tour of the ongoing project to José Apolinário, president of the Coordination Commission and Regional Development of the Algarve, and to Rute Silva, mayor of Vila do Bispo.

"The visit served, mainly, so that the president [of the CCDR] could see the progress of the works, as he had not been there since they started", he explained.

After all, recalled the CCDR following the visit, the intervention in this monument, which represents "a global investment of 2,8 million euros", has "a contribution of 1.047.641 euros, in European funds managed by the CRESC Algarve 2020 Operational Program , from the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF)'.

Access to this money from the European Union, through an application that DRCAlg made to CRESC Algarve 2020, was, moreover, decisive for the advancement of this work, which it had been designed for a long time, but it had never met the conditions to move forward.

“The works started in June and are proceeding at a good pace, although the physical part is not the most significant. The floor has been fixed, the ceiling is being fixed, but the civil construction part is light. The biggest work is in the construction of the cells and the technical part, which is being developed elsewhere», he told the Sul Informação Adriana Nogueira.

The paintings followed and, later, «the work of assembling the lights, the technological part, the images and text on the walls and the interactive part».

Taking into account that the execution period for this work is 190 days, in other words, about six months, the physical work will be ready at the beginning of next year, if everything goes as planned.

According to the Regional Directorate of Culture, «the exhibition center's museographic project intends to make the visitor reflect on the unique value of this territory, from Antiquity to the present day, and how it relates to the “Portuguese Discoveries” and the figure of the Infante D. Henrique».

The new space will provide visitors with "an interactive experience on the relevance of Sagres to human history."

The space for temporary exhibitions will aim to present «new perspectives and perspectives, either through a more historical content or through a contemporary perspective, fostering an attitude of discovery and questioning».
