Caravel «Boa Esperança» left Lagos for Portimão for extensive repairs

Hull and deck wood repairs should take four to five months

The caravel «Boa Esperança» left the dock where it was moored, in Marina de Lagos, for the Shipyards of Portimão, to «carry out an in-depth intervention», announces the Algarve Tourism Region on its Facebook page.

This intervention – in terms of repairs to the wood of the hull and deck – should last from four to five months and takes place within the scope of the Exploraterra project, co-financed with European funds, «to create a joint cultural offer around the first circumnavigation trip. -navigation and maritime exploration, promoting this offer at national and international level and contributing to the increase in tourist flows, especially within the cooperation area – Portugal and Spain», adds the RTA.

This is a partnership between RTA, the Municipality of Lagos and other international partners, with the collaboration of Docapesca, with the objective of carrying out the recovery and enhancement of this replica of the ships from the Discoveries period, in order to integrate the existing cultural offer in the region and to support the promotion of the Algarve destination.

The caravel «Boa Esperança» had been moored for years, without going out to sea or receiving visitors, and slowly rotting, which was a constant reason for negative comments on social networks.
