Adriana Oliveira is the first female diver in the Portuguese Navy

The first cabin boy is 24 years old and has a degree in Marine Science

Adriana Oliveira has now become the first woman in the military to complete the demanding course for the Portuguese Navy Divers class.

The National Maritime Authority explains that, after joining the Navy, the military, who are now completing the specialization course, made the recruit, after which they swore to Bandeira, on July 3, 2020.

This was followed by the demanding phase of the course for the specialization of its class. More than a year later, the 10 soldiers, including the first cabin boy Adriana Oliveira, successfully completed the course that guarantees them entry into the Diver class.

​The first cabin boy Adriana Aquino de Oliveira is 24 years old, was born in Vila do Conde and has a degree in Marine Science from the University of the Azores.

Divers constitute the operational component of the Navy in the field of military diving and explosive device inactivation, through the use of highly specialized teams that operate in a wide spectrum of missions, both in peacetime and in wartime.

It is incumbent upon the Group of Divers, through the Diving Department of the Subsurface Squadron, to promote the readiness, logistical and administrative support of the divers units, as well as ensuring, through the School of Divers, the training and training of the military.

The Divers Units are organized into three detachments, sequentially designated by nº1, nº2 and nº3, subdivided by teams of variable numbers depending on the complexity, geographic dispersion or the duration of the mission justify it.

Armada Divers are capable of diving up to 81 meters deep.

Divers acquired the first Hyperbaric Chamber in the Country, having been installed in the then Escola de Divers, headquartered in the Submarine Flight, pioneering Diving and Hyperbaric Medicine, under the supervision of the Flight Health Service of Submarines.

Divers have participated, throughout their existence, in several missions of public interest and in other important missions, both national and international.

As testimony and relevance of their action, the Navy Divers were awarded high distinctions, namely: Gold Medal of Distinguished Services and ​Ordem do Infante D. Henrique.
