Competition awards best photographs of European Heritage Sites and properties

A photography competition, open to all interested amateurs and professional photographers and citizens of all countries, with the theme “European Heritage Label – Europe starts here!”, is open until 14 March.

The European Heritage Label (ECP) is an initiative of the European Commission to improve knowledge of common European history, heritage and values. The aim of the MEP is to emphasize and reinforce the sense of belonging to the Union among all European citizens, especially young people.

The European Heritage Label "transforms old borders into bridges, encourages intercultural dialogue and creates a sense of belonging to a united Europe", stress its promoters.

In the Algarve, there is a place considered as a European Heritage Label: it is the Promontory of Sagres, which was distinguished in 2015, not only for its unique place in the history of European expansion, culture, science, exploration and trade, but also for the richness of the cultural landscape associated with it.

In Portugal, the following sites or heritage assets were also distinguished with the MPE: The Charter for the Abolition of the Death Penalty (in Torre do Tombo), the General Library of the University of Coimbra and the Underwater Cultural Heritage of the Azores.

This photo contest is one of the educational and promotional activities of European project EHL@N – a cooperation network of European Heritage Label cities and places.

The contest organizer is the EHL@N project consortium, represented by the project leader Burghauptmannschaft Österreich – Vienna Imperial Palace and the Association of European Heritage Label Sites (MPE).

The aim of the competition is to promote the fundamental values ​​of the MEP based on the principles of freedom, democracy, respect for human rights, cultural and linguistic diversity, tolerance and solidarity, which are represented by the European Heritage Label and the places honored by it.

The theme of the competition will focus on MSE sites – events that take place there and all kinds of activities to promote European heritage. Photographs must be accompanied by a personal narrative in relation to the Site and its related values.

O competition it is open to the public – citizens of all countries can participate in the contest, respecting all formal and technical requirements. It is also open to all interested amateurs and professional photographers.

Participants will be qualified in two age categories: youth – under 30 years old (including 30) and adults – over 31 years old.

The photographs pre-selected by the Jury (20 in each age category) will be presented to a wide audience that, in the process of public voting on the project's website, will select the winners in both age categories.

The results of the voting will be announced on 9 May, on the competition organizer's website and media and on the websites of the European institutions that are part of the Jury. Winners will receive a cash prize worth 500 euros.
