22 active cases of Covid-19 confirmed at the Santa Casa de Monchique home

The result was known after 126 Covid-19 screening tests were carried out on users and employees of the institution.

22 active cases of Covid-19 were detected at the Santa Casa da Misericórdia (SCM) home in Monchique, 19 in users and 3 in employees, following the latest wave of tests for the disease, in this institution, on Wednesday. All infected "are asymptomatic", revealed Rui André, mayor of Monchique and deputy provider of SCM Monchiquense.

The announcement was made yesterday on the social network Facebook by the mayor, who stated that the number of tests carried out at the institution was 126, of which 22 were positive.

«All the steps and procedures recommended in the Internal Contingency Plan were taken immediately and, at this time, the positive elderly were isolated in one of the wards, which will now deserve all the medical care and assistance appropriate to the situation», assured Rui André.

"In a perfect articulation between the health authorities and the SCM staff of Monchique, its clinical staff and technical direction, it was possible to put all the care into practice, so that our elderly people are well despite this regrettable circumstance," he added.

Family members of users who tested positive for infection by the new coronavirus have already been notified. In other words, “those who were not contacted must understand that your relative is in good health and had a negative result”.

The detection of these cases came two days after the vaccination campaign against Covid-19 arrived at this home in Monchique and after an employee tested positive – which is why the latest battery of tests was carried out.

In the note he made about vaccination, Rui André assured that he refused to be vaccinated, as the institution's deputy provider, and that he will also decline the vaccine when it "is available to mayors or holders of public office".

“I don't accept receiving the vaccine when so many elderly people, health professionals who are on the front lines and firefighters who come into daily contact with patients are not vaccinated. I will be, by choice, the last to be vaccinated», he said.

However, there are already three more cases related to this outbreak outside the institution, about which "more detailed information" will be given today, promised the Monchiquense mayor.

"I am grateful for the prompt response and effectiveness of the services of Santa Casa da Misericórdia, to whom I wish much strength and courage at this time when we must remain firm in our determination to fight this virus and help those who at this time need extra attention," he said, also the deputy provider of the institution.

Rui André does not fail to put a personal note in the communication he makes of the cases, revealing his "anxiety", bearing in mind that "the users of this institution to which I am very proud to belong are like the grandparents I never had and, for this, all this is an indescribable mixture of feelings».
