There are over 20 tourist trails for those who enjoy cycling on vacation. The new “Cycling Route Guide” wants to promote the use of bicycles in the region throughout the year.

«Following modern trends in urban mobility, in which people go out on the street with bicycles, and with the aim of boosting cycle tourism in the region, Turismo do Algarve has launched a guide that promises to circulate tourists and residents on two wheels on municipal and rural roads and dirt or compacted gravel roads”, says the Algarve Tourism Region (RTA).

The 20 routes are circular (start and end at the same location), pass through the 16 municipalities of the region and were purposely defined for Algarve Tourism by a specialized technician, taking into account criteria such as technical difficulty, points of tourist interest in each county and its suitability for bicycles from touring ou trekking, in tour format.

“We want to get closer to the goals of a smooth and sustainable mobility destination, promoting the use of bicycles during the holidays. According to a 2016 study by Tourism Development International, Europeans will have made about 23 million trips in 2014 motivated by the use of bicycles on vacation. More than a means of transport, the bicycle thus becomes part of the tourist experience itself. With our new guide, we intend to capture the interest of these cyclists in the Algarve, especially those from the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and Germany», says the president of Turismo do Algarve, João Fernandes.

The Algarve's “Cycling Route Guide” is available for free download here and was edited within the scope of the SustenTUR project, which is a candidate for the Sustainability Support Line of the Valorizar Program of Turismo de Portugal.

But this is just one of the many actions developed by Turismo do Algarve in the hiking, cycling and cycle tourism segment. Between November and December of this year, training actions were carried out for 50 accommodation units with a view to qualifying them to better respond to the needs of those traveling by bicycle or on foot.

The units enrolled in this training received a personalized consultancy service that helped them to diagnose their offer and look for solutions to increase the quality of the experience of the hikers and cyclists who stay in them.

"This action was extremely positive, as it allowed the identification of areas for improvement by the accommodation units in terms of the services they provide. cycling e walking. The consultancy team's reports will be the basis for the tourist accommodation in the Algarve to become highly specialized in this segment, which will greatly benefit the destination and the tourist», says João Fernandes.

The “Bike & Walk Friendly” training action was also carried out under SustenTUR, a transversal project in progress until the end of 2020 which is based on the sustainable development of tourism in the Algarve, through information and social awareness initiatives, environmental and cultural aimed at tourism professionals, visitors and resident population.
