Portugal learned, this Wednesday, 22 July, that it is not in the “green list” of countries, prepared by Ireland, and those who visit our country will have to be quarantined on their return. However, João Fernandes, president of the Algarve Tourism Region, believes that the Irish "will continue" to seek the Algarve, because "the decision does not change the possibility of traveling".

According to João Fernandes, «the rules that are already in force now remain» and the Airport of Faro "maintains six routes, with two airlines, to five Irish cities."

The official considers that the occupation of the flights “has been quite good, given the circumstances. We know that both these flights, like the flights from the United Kingdom, have lower occupancy rates than other markets, but we are talking about rates that are making operations viable».

Therefore, João Fernandes believes that the Irish “will continue to travel” to the Algarve, even if they have to be subject to quarantine on their return to their country.

«The connection of the Irish to the Algarve is very strong. It is one of our top five markets. There are a lot of people with investments in the region who spend most of the year here. I think that, due to this decision [by the Irish government], there will be no change in the demand that currently exists”, since the flights were resumed.

The president of Turismo do Algarve also emphasizes that «the Irish list is much more restrictive than those drawn up by other countries» and that «the Government, despite having approved this list, continues to advise to avoid non-essential trips».

Furthermore, the indications “generally say that people returning to the country from countries outside that list must restrict their movements. It is not a very clear indication of the obligations», concludes João Fernandes.

Ireland's “green list” is made up of 13 European countries and two territories (Gibraltar and Greenland), which have a number of coronavirus cases per 100 inhabitants equal to or less than Ireland: Malta, Finland, Norway, Italy, Hungary, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Cyprus, Slovakia, Greece, Monaco and San Marino.

Spain, France or the United Kingdom, as well as Portugal, were left out of the list.
