Aquaculture project off Armona foresees an investment of 25 million euros by 2022

Dourada do Algarve produced under aquaculture in the open sea, near Ilha da Armona, in Olhão, has already started to arrive in Continente stores.

In total, «in partnership with a national aquaculture company, Sonae MC will sell more than 900 tonnes of Algarve seabream», this year, in Continente stores, «thus reinforcing its value proposition for fresh national fish».

As Sonae MC explains, this project has a total planned investment of 25 million euros until 2022 and is mainly intended to supply the group's stores.

Through this joint project, «Sonae MC intends to strengthen its commitment to national production, to support local communities in the Algarve and to improve the supply of fish to the stores, not only in terms of freshness and reduction of delivery time, but also through a very competitive value proposition, promoting sustainable production and consumption of Portuguese fish».

Nuno Vital, Sonae MC's Commercial Director for Fish Market, said that «we aim to increase total sales of national fish by more than 20% in the first year of the project, reaching a share of more than 40% of total fresh fish sales. This project will also make it possible to double the current offer of Portuguese sea bream in the entire market, the most appreciated species in Portugal. Extending, in the coming years, to other species, such as sea bass, snapper and sea bream».
