As Algarve finalists of the 7 Wonders of Popular Culture are going to vote today, July 6, at a gala that is taking place in Monchique. Have you already voted for your favorite candidacy?
Medronho distills (Monchique), copper cataplana, Espiga Festival and Mãe Soberana, all from Loulé, Charolas de Bordeira and Festa da Pinha (Faro) and the Procession of Hallelujah (São Brás de Alportel). These are the 7 Algarve entries in the competition, but only one will be the winner.
The gala, broadcast live on RTP1, runs until 17:30 pm, the time at which it will be known who will pass to the next stage: the semi-finals.
In total 28 semi-finalists will be selected: 20 will be the winners of the regional finals and the other 8 will then be re-pegged from the 20 runners-up in the regional finals.
Each Algarvian candidacy has someone to sponsor it: Giacomo Scalisi, from “Lavrar o Mar”, is the godfather of the strawberry distillery, while the actor Ruy de Carvalho is that of the Procession of Hallelujah (Florida Torches), of São Brás de Alportel.
In Loulé's candidacies, TVI journalist Catarina Canelas is the godmother of the Festa da Mãe Soberana due to having done a report on this religious manifestation. Reinaldo Teixeira (Festa da Espiga) and chef Bertílio Gomes (copper cataplana) are the other godfathers.
Finally, in Faro, Alexandra Goncalves, Director of the Superior School of Management, Hotel and Tourism at the University of Algarve, she is the godmother of Festa da Pinha, in Estoi, and Domingos Caetano, vocalist of Iris, is the godfather of the candidacy of Charolas de Bordeira.
