Fisherman's Day celebrations canceled in Quarteira

Organization considers that concentration of audience could create a focus of propagation of Covid-19

The celebrations of Fisherman's Day, which marks the 31st of May, have been canceled in Quarteira, announced the Municipality of Loulé. The Fisherman's Snacks Festival, an initiative associated with the date, which was scheduled for the 29th, 30th and 31st, will also not take place.

According to the Loulé autarchy, «aware of the high number of people participating at both times, the entities involved in this organization believe that only with the cancellation of the program will it be possible to avoid the concentration of the public, which could create a focus for the propagation of Covid- 19 and thus endanger public health.

The Loulé Council says that this "is another measure that arises from the need to create actions that allow for the containment of the spread of the new coronavirus, at a time when the country will begin to gradually emerge from confinement."

The Fisherman's Day celebrations in Quarteira are the result of a partnership between Quarpesca – Association of Shipowners and Fishermen of Quarteira, the Municipality of Loulé and the Parish Council of Quarteira, and every year they have a gastronomic space at Praça do Mar, where visitors can enjoy some prepared delicacies and watch musical shows.

The highlight of the program takes place on the beach, where the traditional washing or dragging ashore takes place, one of the attractions of this party, in which the population is invited to participate in the “pulling of the net”.
