João Rebelo (CDS) will remain «attentive to the reality of the Algarve»

CDS failed to elect any deputy for the Algarve

He was not elected as a deputy in the Legislative Elections this Sunday, October 6, but João Rebelo, the head of the CDS/PP list for the Algarve, guarantees that he will "keep an eye on the reality" of the region.

Ao Sul Informação, João Rebelo said that the "great objective", which was to elect a member of parliament again, "was not achieved".

For this failure, in the opinion of the former deputy, some factors contributed. “There was a very negative national dynamic, with a very strong bipolarization between PS and PSD that tremendously harmed the CDS in terms of useful vote”, he began by explaining.

To this was added «a second problem»: the appearance «of parties in the CDS's area of influence, such as the Liberal Initiative, the Aliança and the Chega, and that stole wishes".

But João Rebelo also pointed out as the cause of the bad result the fact that the CDS leadership was “worn out”.

“That was clear to us when we were walking down the street talking to people. There was a very strong erosion of the image of the party leadership», he considered.

Moreover, given the national debacle, Assunção Cristas, president of the CDS/PP, has already left the leadership, right on the night of the elections.

In the analysis of the electoral result, João Rebelo highlighted the «giant numbers of abstention in the Algarve», which was 54,17%.

"It's very worrying, even because it is recurrent, but I haven't seen many people talk about this issue", he considered.

For the future, at the regional level, João Rebelo said that the CDS will "continue to work".

“We have a lot to do. Next week, I will meet, in the Algarve, with all the structures to take stock of the results and to look into the future», he said.

“We kept some contacts to implement the party in some areas and we are going to move forward with that. We can't pretend it's all over now. Let's go forward. The approximately 4% who voted for us, in the Algarve, deserve to be reciprocated and that is our task», he added.

In João Rebelo's opinion, the CDS – and the right-wing parties – should now focus on the 2021 Municipalities.

“We are in the middle of six years of socialist governance and there will always be political wear and tear. It's an opportunity, also in the Algarve. There is great potential, if there is union and dynamics, for a very strong transformation in municipal terms», he concluded.

In the Legislative Elections this Sunday, the Socialist Party was the most voted party in the 16 Algarve councils. The places algarvians in the Assembly of the Republic were distributed by the PS (5), PSD (3) e Left Block (1).
