VRSA PCP tries to prevent municipal company from selling Hotel Guadiana building

Majority PSD in the Chamber of VRSA rejected proposals to prevent the sale of the property

The Vila Real de Santo António CDU saw the PSD majority in the Chamber reject a proposal to maintain the public sphere of the Hotel Guadiana building, a heritage that currently belongs to the bankrupt municipal company SGU, which is already in the process of extinction.

At Tuesday's Chamber meeting, the communists began by asking Conceição Cabrita, president of the Chamber, who is also chairman of the Board of Directors of the SGU, “to withdraw the sale proposal and return it to SGU for annulment by the Council of Management".

«As this request had been denied, as an alternative, the CDU proposed that the exercise of the preemptive right be voted in favor of the exercise of the preemptive right, entering the proposed amount in the final accounts adjustment between the Municipality of Vila Real de Santo António and the Urban Management Society, in liquidation time, a proposal that the PSD also rejected”, according to the CDU.

The proposal of this party results from the fact that the property was purchased and recovered by SGU «with the aim of creating a five-star hotel unit».

“The building was expropriated by the City Council, when it was in court for a dispute, still unresolved, on property rights, with the allegation of public utility. In this building, large public funds and community funds were invested to restore and transform it into a five-star hotel, being presented as an ex-libris in the recovery of the touristic image of the city and the municipality», they describe.

Now, SGU is trying to sell the fraction it owns of this building to Banco Comercial Português, for around three million euros, «and asked the municipality not to exercise the right of preference, as is its prerogative, because the building is located. in the Pombaline Historic Area of the city of Vila Real de Santo António».

"In the approved proposal of the City Council, there are not even burdens on the sale to safeguard the City Council from releasing any future responsibilities to be assumed by the City, in case the City Council loses in the expropriation process", accuse the communists.

The CDU concludes that, in this way, «the municipality of Vila Real de Santo António will be indebted, without assets, unable to meet its commitments and the population to pay for decades maximum rates on all services».
